CLEVELAND - When the weather finally breaks and it’s warm enough to take a nice long walk outside, the sun can feel good on our skin.

According to Amy Kassouf, M.D., of Cleveland Clinic, the cool breeze of the spring air can make it easy to forget that the sun’s rays are just as harmful to our skin as they are during the sweltering heat of summer.

“When you go out there, or if you’re going to your Hawaii vacation to escape the mid-winter blues, you are going with absolutely no protection, so you really do need sunscreen and even as the sun comes on, you are going to forget; it’s going to be a little windy and cooler and you’re really going to forget that you’re getting that sun,” said Dr. Kassouf.

Dr. Kassouf said since our skin has likely not been exposed to the elements of the sun during winter months, we have no protection built up and although it is damaging to the skin, a little bit of color does provide some natural protection.

However, she reminds folks that it’s never a good idea to get that color from laying in the sun or going to a tanning salon, as both add to a person’s lifetime exposure to ultraviolet rays and increases their risk of developing skin cancer.

Dr. Kassouf said it’s best to get a little at a time and to wear a broad spectrum sunscreen, which covers both UVA and UVB rays of at least 30 SPF.

She said it’s also important for folks who are exercising outside to know that it’s easy to sweat off sunscreen, so it’s important to re-apply.

And for those who happen to find a bottle leftover from last summer, Dr. Kassouf said they’re probably not using enough.

“If you’re using your sunscreen properly, one ounce of sunscreen should cover your whole body at the beach,” said Dr. Kassouf. “So if you buy an eight ounce sunscreen and you re-apply every two hours, you could go through a whole bottle between you and a child, or a spouse in a day.”

Another easy way to protect from the sun is to wear SPF clothing. Dr. Kassouf said the best part about SPF clothing is that it stays put no matter the angle of the sun and there’s no need to re-apply it.
